Flute in pit band? 20 characters?

I signed up to be in pit for Beauty and the Beast and I heard that flutes have to play really high notes since we're the highest instruments (there's no piccolo) and someone told me that being in pit band helped them get a lot better at flute. Is that true and what was your experience like?
