What are the most important ball room dances to know?

Social (as opposed to ballroom) foxtrot and waltz are the places to begin learning smooth/standard dances and will actually help in learning the rhythm/Latin dances. The choice of the first Latin dance is less important, but the trend in American ballroom is to teach swing (eastern style) first; in the English style, cha cha is the usual first.
